My birthday is coming up on Feb. 2nd, and I was thinking of what I was going to do. I could go to cypress gardens (we have season passes) or maybe a poker party. Then I thought, what if I didnt have a party, didnt get presents, and just got an I-pod. I could just find the cheapest one, and Bam-o, uh... something. What does everyone think about it?

If you don't need all of the disk space they now have two smaller models that hold 120 songs or 250 songs (roughly 0.00000000000025 bazillion). Or the Mini holds 1,000 songs. I have a 20 GB iPod with 3,400 songs on it and it's starting to get full (has a bunch of data too). Nicole just got the U2 iPod, so join the club. The new models, called iPod Shuffles, are at the link below. I like that they say it is smaller than a pack of gum and then put a footnote in that says "Do not eat iPod Shuffle"

The Shuffles have either 512 MB of space or 1 GB and no moving parts. They don't have a screen that tells you what song you are playing and they hook directly into a USB port. The next up in the line is the iPod Mini which has a 4 GB hard drive and includes a screen. The the regular iPods have 20 or 40 GB hard drives with a screen. Then there is the iPod Photo in 40 GB or 60 GB which has a color screen that lets you see digital photos but is otherwise pretty similar to the regular iPods.

Eric,
Please tell your friend Julie that she is welcome to post on our family blog, but could she please sign her name "Jules" in the name field when posting? I keep thinking your grandmother has flipped out when I see Jules' posts signed Julie (aka Gramalie.)

I'll tell her. Do you know when the 4gb mini comes out? is that less than the current mini?

All minis have always been 4 GB.

I heard that the mini price would be lowered to $199. Is there any truth to this?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they dropped the price to $200. When the mini first came out people would buy them just to get to the Compact Flash hard drive inside because those were selling for a lot more than $250 at the time. I just checked and a place is selling the 4 GB Hitachi Microdrive for $205 so it makes sense that the price of the mini would come down to something around that.
However, they won't announce the price drop in advance, it will just happen one day. If they were going to announce a price drop they might have done it this week at the Mac show in San Francisco and they didn't. So that would indicate it could be a while longer before it happens. Plus most places are sold out of mini's, indicating Apple can continue to charge $250.

One other thing I thought of is that Apple might just increase the capacity of the hard drives on the mini and keep the price the same. Then I found a rumor that said they were going to do this because Hitachi wasn't supplying enough hard drives. Seagate makes a similar drive but it is 5 GB. Then I found out that some minis may already be shipping with Seagate drives but the current software on the mini limits them to 4 GB of space. However eventually they should come out with new software that may unlock the fifth gigabyte.

Im trying to decide if:
1.I should save $250 (w/ birthday money) and buy the mini
2. I should wait for the price to lower and then get the mini
3. or use the best deal and get the full ipod for 300.
It seems dumb to get less then half the gig for only $50 less, but I really dont know if I need that much space.

I saw a mini ipod for the first time yesterday. It was WAY to small nd thin for my taste. I'd end up losing it or breaking it.
