Pepsi Launches Worst Ad Campaign in History

| | Comments (2)

As I've scaled back the amount of TV I view to only news or the occasional thirty minute show, I've experienced the pleasant lack of commercials bombarding me daily. Unfortunately, I still have to deal with sickening ad campaigns launched by companies like Pepsi.

Corporations have been attempting to cast themselves as omnipresent historical items for some time, like this spot for scotch company Johnnie Walker. The similarities are obvious; fantastic moments are shown and are correlated with the brand. The most significant difference between the Walker spot and the Pepsi commercial is that at no point is a bottle of Johnnie walker featured next to these scenes. I can't give the scotch company much credit; showing a bottle of liquor next to the civil rights marchers would no doubt cause a backlash; but Pepsi crosses the line from annoying corporate association with precious historical moments to actual branding of these events. This wouldn't be quite so offensive if scenes of the Berlin wall were not included. Showing hippies holding Pepsi bottles is obviously moronic, but to actually show the oppressed people of East Germany knocking down the Berlin wall with Pepsi cans in their hands is nauseating. Still, it isn't exactly surprising.
